A Twist To Granny Square - Scarf Pattern

Updated on March 4, 2013

This was one of my initial crocheting projects. A Newbie to crocheting, I had a lot of help from the beautiful Crochet pattern books. Full of colours and new patterns, it made me feel delighted to try each new stitch.

Initially when I started crocheting, I only crocheted Scarves. Now after 3 years, I have crochet top, dresses, bags , hat, blankets and many more things. It has become a daily routine of my life.

So lets begin with this simple pattern. It is quick and easy.

Level: Intermediate

Materials:

Yarn (Any three colours of your choice)

Size H/8 5 mm crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Note:

  1. Beginning ch-3 counts as first double crochet of round.

Pattern

With the 1st colour, ch 12 (choose a colour that you want as the base of your scraf)

Round 1: (2dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the 4th ch from hook, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 ch, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, (3 dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 2 , 3 dc) all in the last ch.

Working on opposite side of the foundation ch, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, 1 dc in each of the next 3 ch, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, join with SL st to top of the beginning ch-2. End 1st colour.

Round 2: Join 2nd colour in the last ch-2 space made, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-2 space, *ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 2) in next 2 ch-2 spaces, (3dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2) twice, rep from * once, omitting last (3dc, ch2), join with SL st to top of beg ch-3. End 2nd colour.

Pattern Continued

Round 3: Join 3rd colour in the first ch-2 space of the last round, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 2, *(3dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, (3dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, (ch 2, 3 dc) in each of next 3 ch-2 spaces, ch 2, rep from * once, omitting last (3dc, ch2), join with SL st to top of beg ch-3. End the 3rd colour.

Round 4: Join 2nd colour in the first ch-2 space of the last round, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-2 space, * ch 2 (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, (ch2, 3 dc in next ch- 2 space) twice, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-2 space, (ch 2, 3 dc) in each of next 4 ch-2 spaces, ch 2, rep from * once omitting last (3dc, ch 2), join with SL st to top of beg ch-3. Joining and Fringe

Joining: To join the granny rectangles, I took the width side of the rectangle, Sl st with the first colour.

Foundation Row: Ch 4, skip next ch, dc in the next ch, rep this till the end of the row.

Row 1: Ch 4, dc on the dc from the last row, rep till the end.

Repeat Row 1, two times.

Joining another granny to Dc:

Row 4: Ch 3, (ch 1 - inserting the hook in the next granny rechtangle 1 stitch, like a SL st), *skip the next ch, yarn over, insert the hook in the dc of the last row and corresponding stitch of the granny rectangle, pull up a loop, complete the stitch as a normal double crochet stitch, rep from * until the end. Fasten off.

Repeat foundation row and row 1-4 for joining the other granny squares.

Fringe:

Wrap colour 1 yarn around your palms, keeping the fingers separated. Wrap as many times as you like. The more times wrapped the thicker the fringe.

Cut of the yarn after wrapping enough. Cut off the bottom loops of the wrapping. Tie one of the loose strands through the center of the strands. Brush the strands to smooth out and trim off to give a clean edging.

Make at least 6 fringes.

Tie the strand, (that was used to tie all the other strands together) to granny rectangle. the strands will blend with other strands, No need to trim off.
